HKR International Launches DBee Oasis Initiative Promoting Ecological Diversity

HKR International Limited (“HKRI”) is proud to announce the launch of the DBee Oasis, a long-term initiative aimed at enhancing the habitat for our buzzing pollinators to promote ecological diversity. This innovative project, initiated by HKRI Care & Share, the corporate volunteer team of HKRI, aligns beautifully with Discovery Bay’s values of environmental protection, green living, and community farming. HKRI held an opening ceremony today (15 May) featuring Ms Charlotte Ho, General Manager of Branding and Marketing; Mr Simon Tu, General Manager of DB Operations at Discovery Bay; and Ms Jill Kwong, co-founder of the bee conservation organisation Beetales. Together, they installed bee hotels at the DBee Oasis, marking a new chapter in conservation efforts in Discovery Bay.

Ms Charlotte Ho remarked, "Discovery Bay is a vital green community in Hong Kong, with a greening ratio of two-thirds. Our Group places great emphasis on sustainable development in the area. In addition to actively promoting renewable energy and waste recycling, our collaboration with Beetales on the DBee Oasis Project further strengthens our commitment to ecological conservation and a sustainable future. We look forward to continuing our partnership with all stakeholders to take meaningful steps in protecting the environment and maintaining the relationship between nature and the community."

The DBee Oasis, the first urban oasis project in Hong Kong, provides essential floral and water sources for over 50 species of pollinators, including the magnificent Golden Birdwing—the largest butterfly in Hong Kong, with a wingspan ranging from 9 to 16 cm, and the only insect protected by law in the region.

The Blossom Tower is crafted from natural materials, featuring plants of native species. We are partnering with Hong Kong Metropolitan University to install instruments to monitor pollinating insects and conduct environmental DNA sequencing for plants. This collaboration will enable us to collect samples and valuable data for assessing biodiversity and preparing statistical analysis, and thus provide actionable recommendations for enhancing urban sustainability. With recent challenges faced by our beloved pollinators due to weather changes, the establishment of the DBee Oasis is set to make a positively splendid impact within a two-kilometre radius, benefiting areas such as the Siu Ho Wan Bus Depot and Discovery Bay Golf Club.

To celebrate this initiative, we recently held a delightful Mead Brewing Workshop where attendees gathered to craft their very own bottle of mead, inspired by the spirit of Dionysus, using honey harvested right here in Hong Kong.

The workshop was expertly led by the wonderful team from Beetales. Participants immersed themselves in the fascinating world of beekeeping, honey harvesting, and the brewing process, all while relishing the exquisite flavours of mead. The workshop not only highlighted the importance of pollinator conservation but also showcased how urban projects like DBee Oasis can significantly enrich local ecosystems. Participants departed the workshop enriched with knowledge, a deeper appreciation for the art of mead-making, and the essential role of pollinators in our ecosystem, all while indulging their senses in the process, reminiscent of the joys celebrated by Dionysus.
