HKRI Taikoo Hui in Shanghai Publishes 2024 Sustainability Report

HKRI Taikoo Hui in Shanghai recently released its voluntary 2024 Sustainability Report, prepared based on Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Standards. The report highlights the project’s commitment to a greener future, showcasing key accomplishments in commercial operations, cultural engagement, green environment, human capital development and industry collaborations from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2024.

As a leading example of sustainable development, HKRI Taikoo Hui exemplifies sustainability through its visionary planning and advanced technologies, prioritising environmental stewardship in its design and operations. To date, the complex has obtained several green building certifications, including LEED®, WELL™, and RESET™ Air. From spatial layout and energy optimisation to indoor air quality management, it strictly follows international standards, including ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems and ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems, to establish a systematic framework that ensures environmental performance meet the highest standards.

To achieve its energy conservation and emissions reduction goals, HKRI Taikoo Hui has formulated the “HKRI Taikoo Hui Environmental Policy” and “HKRI Taikoo Hui Energy Saving Policy”. These policies are underpinned by an energy management system that enables real-time data collection of electricity consumption across its office and retail tenants, supporting accurate analysis of energy consumption.

A number of innovative technologies and systems have been adopted, such as wastewater and rainwater recycling, indoor air quality monitoring, and drip irrigation to reduce water consumption.

HKRI Taikoo Hui has appointed the Research Centre for Building Energy Efficiency under Tsinghua University as a special consultant to enhance its heating and cooling systems through smart control technologies that adjust water temperature and pump frequency in response to outdoor conditions, significantly improving energy performance. Other initiatives include upgrading air conditioning systems for retail tenants, installing HVAC monitoring tools for office tenants, and implementing a lighting retrofit programme. Compared to the previous year, these initiatives led to energy savings of 2,550,000 kWh in 2024, representing a 4.41% reduction in total energy consumption; a 3.83% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions; and a 7.71% reduction in overall water consumption.

HKRI Taikoo Hui also demonstrates a strong commitment to education and community engagement. It has participated in the “Earth Hour” global campaign, and hosted the eco-exhibition “Re”Me to raise awareness of climate change in collaboration with over 30 tenants. In addition, HKRI Taikoo Hui actively promotes green operations among its tenants, with 14 restaurants earning Swire Properties’ “Green Kitchen” recognition, contributing to sustainability together.
