“Love•Together@DB”, a caring platform under Hong Kong Resort Company Limited, together with Discovery Bay Services Management Limited and HKR International, recently organised an enriching outdoor educational tour in Discovery Bay for 120 teachers and students from SKH Kei Hin Primary School. The young explorers visited various areas across Discovery Bay to learn more about the ecological resources of this resort-style residential community. This ecological journey instilled in the students a strong awareness of sustainability, carrying forward Discovery Bay’s green principles to other communities.
Urban Oasis Blossom Tower “DBee Oasis”
The students began their tour at Hong Kong’s first urban oasis blossom tower, DBee Oasis, where they took part in eco-themed quiz games to learn about the tower’s ecological impact. Nestled in the Central Park of Discovery Bay, the blossom tower is designed to provide essential floral and water sources, along with safe resting spots for pollinators within a 2-km radius. The initiative plays a vital role in facilitating pollinations, sustaining the food chain, and maintaining eco harmony.
Discovery Bay Mangroves
The students also carried out an ecological learning session at Discovery Bay mangroves. Within this thriving wetland, they observed two of Hong Kong’s eight true mangrove species and learned how the mangroves served as vital habitats for fiddler crabs, mudskippers, egrets, and mollusks - gaining an appreciation for the harmony and intricacy of the ecosystem. The mangroves are safeguarded by a surrounding breakwater that protects the intertidal zone, which connects the tree stratum of high and low lands. Rainwater runoff and tidal movements together create a distinctive brackish water environment alternating with fresh water.
Green Icon
The itinerary also included a visit to Green Icon, a recycling station and eco-exhibition centre in Discovery Bay. The centre is equipped with a food waste composter and a glass crusher, which transform food waste into compost for gardening; and process discarded glass into powder for road paving and repairs, respectively. Through a docent briefing, students gained an understanding of how the principle of sonic vibration enabled glass sand to be upcycled into colourful art pieces, showcasing the innovative potential of circular regeneration.
Additionally, trees felled by Typhoon Mangkhut were repurposed into wooden benches, now placed at the centre, Discovery Bay bus stops, and leisure areas of different estates for community use. Green Icon exemplifies sustainable transformation, having been revitalised from a former garbage collection station into a dedicated centre for environmental education.
We strive to cultivate young minds through educational initiatives, advancing sustainable development and inspiring future leaders to drive environmental and social well-being.
