In Discovery Bay, art naturally blends into the paths that residents walk every day, the familiar street corners they pass, and the life they share with their pets. This time, Discovery Bay has joined hands with four local artists from Art Dreamers to create three new giant cat- and dog-themed murals at DB Plaza North, namely “DB Daily”, “Welcome to DB”, and “The Happy Paw Bakery”. These three murals do more than add visual impact to the space, they feel like story chapters extending from Discovery Bay’s daily life.
DB Daily: A Lively Long Scroll of the Community’s Everyday Moments
Created jointly by two Hong Kong illustrators, Mr. Gabriel Li and Ms. Sylvia Yeh. The mural features 100 lively furry friends, including 50 cats and 50 dogs, charmingly incorporated into Discovery Bay’s landmark, such as strolling along the promenade and playing ice hockey at the Ice Rink, presenting a detailed portrayal of residents’ daily life in Discovery Bay.
Welcome to DB: A Cat that Has Become the Community’s Friendliest Host
Created by Mr. Lee Hok-fung, a professional art instructor at Art Dreamers. The artwork depicts a playful cat waving to passers-by, warmly welcoming everyone to visit Discovery Bay. The cat’s breed and fur colour are also claimed to resemble those of a cat owned by an expatriate resident in Discovery Bay, and it has therefore become very popular among residents.
The Happy Paw Bakery: Opening Another Kind of Discovery Bay Scenery between Imagination and Playfulness
Created by mural artist, Ms. Kam Shing-yan, the mural is inspired by a fantasy world and depicts a Shiba Inu lying calmly inside a café with its eyes closed. Using a slightly Dutch-angle composition, the mural creates a playful effect that shows the giant Shiba Inu appear as if it is protruding from a building structure, while adding a touch of whimsy and childlike charm that leaves a strong impression on residents.
A Community United Through Art
Seen together, the three murals not only bring an artistic atmosphere to the shopping centre, but also create more reasons for people to connect, and linger in the public space. During the mural painting process, many Discovery Bay residents stopped by to admire the works and proactively chat with the artists.
One long-time Discovery Bay resident said, “I pass by here every day, and seeing the wall slowly change makes me feel happier too”. Meanwhile, the real cat featured in “Welcome to DB” is often seen roaming around the community. One resident could not help but laugh and say, “It really looks like the cat downstairs - even the expression is the same”. Another added, “Every time I see it waving, it feels like I’m home”.
When artworks can resonate with residents’ memories, emotions, and everyday experiences, they are no longer just images on a wall, they become part of the community’s story. Between these murals, Discovery Bay is doing more than presenting itself as a pet-friendly neighbourhood, it is bringing together its lifestyle, neighbourly spirit, and people-pet harmony into a more complete and heart-felt brand story. Art adds colour to the community, and the community, in turn, gives art its soul.
